I feel very lucky to have chosen Mr Rajaratnam from the list of approved surgeons from my insurance company. Having prevaricated and procrastinated, knowing my knee was pretty bad, I went to see Mr Rajaratnam who told me I needed a total knee replacement. I was able to have the operation at The Horder Centre in Crowborough within a few weeks, with Barry his regular anaesthetist managing the anaesthetic and pain relief brilliantly. Mr Rajaratnam visited a few hours after the op, and again the next day. The physios seemed to have a great working relationship with him too and I felt in really great hands. The knee felt part of me from the very start, aided no doubt by it being a ROSA robotic procedure too. I had no bruising, was able to stand and take a few tentative steps the same day as the op, and by the next day I was able to walk around with crutches, lift my leg and get a very good bend. Six weeks later I have been signed off by Mr Rajaratnam, but not the physios quite yet, and my recovery goes from strength to strength. I'm looking forward to playing tennis again, I'm already able to cycle and walk around the house without the crutches. In summary it has been a privilege to have such a specialist in his field, and to have had what is quite a major op carried out with so little pain and with such precision.

A very skilled and charming man. Listens well and answers all questions. My recovery was swift and I only suffered from minor discomfort but no pain. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Rajaratnam. Elizabeth Adams September 2023

What a brilliant experience. My procedure was surgically complicated. From my initial consultation with the remarkably talented and sensitive Sam through the operation, Sam and his team of anaesthetist, the calming Barry, surgical sister, the experienced Christine, and Richard, the extraordinary physiotherapist was professionally exemplary with excellent empathy and good humour.....and the operation was a great success. I believe them to be the very best team in the UK.

The care that I received from Sam, Barry and Chris and the team was first class. They were all extremely informative, communicated in plain English and were very reassuring and empathetic. I needed two total knee replacements as a result of RA and I was able to have both operations completed within 10 weeks of each other. On each occasion, their attention to my recovery and pain management was remarkable. I walked into Theatre in excruciating pain and left the hospital pain free both times. I have not had pain in my knees since. This is truly incredible and has been life changing - to be able to walk again and be pain free. Four weeks after my second operation, I have been able to walk about a mile unaided. Everyone who looked after me was so kind and I cannot thank them enough. My follow up was at HCA, Welbeck Street and again the after care that I received, was flawless. Nobody wants to have a knee replacement, never mind two, but if you need it done, in my view, there is only one team to go to.

I have recently had two knee replacements by Mr Sam Rajaratnam, one on 27th Feb and the other on 27th April 2023. Both have turned out superbly due to his and his team's care. To say they are beyond expectation is not an exaggeration. As someone at the age of 73 still very committed to sport, Real Tennis and wicket keeping in cricket, his understanding of my desire to get back into sport led to focussed and sensible advice about what I could expect to do and when after the operation. It was given in a way I completely trusted and could follow, even though it involved delay to sporting involvement to enable soft tissue to recover. Unlike several of my friends who have had recent knee operations elsewhere, and suffered post surgery with pain and swelling due to the way the operation was carried out and lack of integrated post op care, I have had none at all in either knee. Part of which has not only been due to the excellent operational skill employed, but also to his anaesthetist, Dr Barry Phillips, who works with Mr Sam Rajaratnam. His information on the method of anaesthetic one could choose to have pre-op to the post - op medical care package was superb. The only pain I have suffered is stretching muscles into the full range of stretch available with completely new knees. The additional assistance suggested by Mr Rajaratnam was to use a team of specialist physios (Flexed Physio) who deal only with knees. They helped prepare my legs for the operation and post-op worked with me on a reducing scale from three times per week initially down to once per week after six weeks, as well as setting physio tasks, checking with Mr Rajaratnam when necessary, so as a patient I felt completely looked after in the post op period. The result for each knee was that I was able to walk normally after two weeks without a crutch, although I would take one with me when going outside to help on staircases or if standing for a long time. I cannot recommend Mr Sam Rajaratnam and his team highly enough for their skill and holistic approach, pre-op and post-op.
